Jagruti (Awakening), an endeavour to promote inclusion of Children with Disabilities through Adventure Sports

The “Jagruti (Awakening)”, a Skill Development Training in Leadership Through Adventure Sports and Rescue Operations in Disaster Prone Areas for Children with and without Disabilities, was organized successfully on 14th and 15th October 2015 jointly by Open Learning Systems (OLS) and Special Olympics Bharat-Odisha at Gadatorihan Mohanty Sahi in Nimapada block.  The programme was supported by Adoptionscentrum as part of its Community Based Rehabilitation of Children with Disabilities being implemented by OLS. Sri Prakash K Rath, CEO of OLS & Area Director of Special Olympics Bharat-Odisha elaborating on the objective of the programme explained that this is one of the processes of inclusion of Children with Disabilities into the mainstream society and ensuring realization of their right to recreation and leisure as such events help build their confidence to compete with children without disabilities, teaches them life skills like Team Work, Decision Making, Leadership etc. and most importantly the children without disabilities  develop respect for the abilities and build camaraderie among them. In Special Olympics parlance this is known as ‘Unified Sports”. The trainers Ms. Arpita Mohapatra, Ms. Ranju Chakravarty, Mr. Amit Rana and Mr. Lala Das are experts in various Adventure Sports and have conducted several such events across the country. The activities conducted were “Wave Net”, “River Crossing”, “Commando Walk” and “Burma Bridge” and living in the natural environment. Students of the nearby DAV School and scores of people from 10 panchayats of Nimapada along with nearly 50 children with and without disabilities participated and enjoyed the activities. The programmed today coincided with the “World Hand Wash Day” which was also conducted at the same venue and inaugurated by a former vigilance officer and an eminent person of the area, Mr. Kalyan Kumar Mohanty who along with Mr. Nakul Chandra Swain of Jageswari Youth Club highlighted the importance of hand wash. Mr. Bharat Chandra Majhi, Field Coordinator of CBR Project demonstrated various appropriate ways of washing hands. The programmed was attended by representatives of the print media. The whole event was excellently coordinated and organized by Mr. Prasant Keshari Mishra, Project Coordinator of OLS with his team.
